Our market rate is $125, per student, per day. This is in line with the reimbursement rate provided by Outdoor Schools Washington. Visit https://www.outdoorschoolswa.org/ to learn more about the reimbursement and state funding process!
If your school is private and thus does not qualify for the Outdoor Schools WA funding, please reach out to us! We have several longstanding clients who represent private schools. We firmly believe every child deserves an outdoor education experience and want to work with your school community.
Multi-school interaction
Our property has the capacity to accommodate over 250 overnight guests. OSPREY Camp can serve several schools from the same district, providing valuable social bonding prior to entering middle school. We highly recommend partnering with other schools in your district so we can promote social-emotional learning and fun socialization opportunities.
Mentor Recruitment, Training and Supervision
During their week at OSPREY Camp, students are with their classroom teachers during academic activities; both in the morning and in the afternoon. When not with their teachers, students are with high school mentors who are supported by our adult OSPREY Camp Staff. This is in keeping with our model of high school mentors serving as positive role models to our 5th and 6th grade students. The OSPREY Camp Staff works with local high schools to recruit ideal mentors for our weeks of camp. After completing a rigorous application, selection and training process, high school mentors are supervised and supported by camp staff 24-hours a day.
Recreational Activities
Whether it’s a camfire, line dancing, a gaga ball tournament or owl calling, the OSPREY Camp staff provides the opportunity for a variety of evening activities. Time between classes is also planned and monitored by camp staff to ensure students are positively engaged throughout their time at OSPREY Camp. Whether it’s practicing an environmental skit or song to present at the closing campfire, working on cabin presentations for meal times or taking part in various cabin competitions, students are encouraged at all times to make a positive contribution to OSPREY Camp.
Transportation costs
We do not provide transportation to schools. Most schools use school buses to get campers to and from camp. Conveniently located 10 minutes from I-5, just off exit #101, Camp Solomon Schechter is an oasis of 170-acres of wildlife and nature in what many consider to be a suburban location. To calculate your school’s actual cost of transportation, use Tumwater, WA.
Meals
OSPREY Camp is a nut-free, pork-free, Kosher facility. Our amazing chef and kitchen staff work tirelessly to provide three wholesome meals each day. Fresh fruit is also available, at all times, for a quick snack. OSPREY Camp works hard to accommodate most diets and allergy requests; including vegetarian, vegan, gluten free and lactose intolerant.
Note for religiously observant families: We do not serve pork at Osprey Camp. Our meat served onsite is Kosher certified, but it is not Halal certified. Campers who would like to observe Halal eating requirements at camp can mark themselves as ‘Vegetarian’ on their permission slip and we will make sure these kids get nutritious, protein filled, meat-free meals at camp. Additionally, we will work with campers who come to camp during Ramadan to make sure they get nutrient dense meals during their specific eating hours.
Safety
The camp’s entrance is controlled by an electronic gate, so only authorized guests are permitted access. Additionally, major hospitals are only minutes away, and camp is 911 served.
Many factors contribute to the decision for a school to select an overnight outdoor education program, and with over 50-years of experience in the field, OSPREY Camp Staff will make your stay an experience of a lifetime. All OSPREY Camp Staff are CPR/AED/First Aid certified. Additionally, we work with our school partners to ensure each student who comes to camp has a dedicated medical provider on site who will distribute medication. To set up these procedures and roles, we follow the school districts’ lead. Whatever your district policy’s is, we defer to that! We do this to make sure Camp is a continuation of your school experience — campers should come here and feel like they understand the rules and boundaries.
At OSPREY Camp, we pride ourselves on creating a loving, open, and inclusive environment for our staff, volunteers, mentors, teachers, and students. OSPREY Camp strives to be an emotionally, spiritually, and physically safe place for all young people to get outside in meaningful ways. OSPREY Camp has a zero-tolerance policy for hatred, bigotry, homophobia, racism, sexism, colonialism, colorism, xenophobia, ableism, violence, antisemitism, and oppression of any kind.
